Sexual dysfunction can be a major cause of disability in women. The current survey was conducted between November 2009 and January 2010. A prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over design study was performed between January 2010 and April 2020. We included 12 healthy postmenopausal women with a mean age of 55.7 years and a mean BMI of 30.5 kg/m2. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted between April 1st and June 30th. The objective of the trial was to assess the efficacy and safety of sildenafil (Viagra®) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in postmenopausal women.
The study was conducted with a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over design. The protocol was approved by the University of Wollongong University Ethics Committee (N. G. E. C. E.0005-14-1). A protocol-setting committee approved the study. Women were excluded if they: were a previous sexually active woman with a history of erectile dysfunction, had at least one sexual activity, and were of an established family history of erectile dysfunction or were aged under 25 years. Women who did not meet the criteria for inclusion were excluded. Women with a history of erectile dysfunction were randomized to sildenafil (Viagra®) or placebo. The study was performed at the Department of Family Medicine and Obstetrics, University of Wollongong Hospital and the Women’s Health Centre, Wollongong University Hospital, Wollongong, South Korea. The women were excluded if they: had a history of cardiovascular diseases, had a history of cardiovascular diseases, had a history of cardiovascular diseases, had an abnormal echocardiogram or who were taking nitrates. The women were excluded if they were pregnant, had a history of bleeding disorders, had an abnormal echocardiogram, had a history of stroke or blood clot during the past 14 days, were receiving concomitant antiplatelet medications, and were receiving a prescription for sildenafil. In the control group, the placebo was administered via a vein injection, whereas in the sildenafil group, the woman was given a placebo injection. The women were instructed to complete the baseline screening questionnaire before the study period. The study was performed between January and March 2019, and the follow-up visits were held for 1 to 4 weeks. The study protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Wollongong University Hospital (No. N. The study was registered on Clinical Trial Registry (NCT01924981) and was conducted in English.
Of the 12 participants, 7 were excluded because of their medical history of erectile dysfunction (n=4, 7 had no sexual activity, 4 had a history of cardiovascular disease, 2 had a history of cardiovascular disease and 1 had a history of heart disease), 2 were excluded because they had a history of cardiovascular disease (n=2), 2 had a history of cardiovascular diseases (n=1), 2 had a history of hypertension, 2 had a history of hypertension and 1 had a history of coronary artery disease. 4 of these 6 patients were in the sildenafil group. All of these 6 patients had a history of cardiovascular disease, while the 4 patients who were not in the sildenafil group had a history of hypertension. The mean age of the 12 study participants was 60.8±8.3 years. The mean BMI was 29.2±6.3 kg/m2. The mean duration of the study was 5.5±2.5 months. There were 2 in the sildenafil group and 1 in the placebo group. The mean pre-intervention and post-intervention characteristics are presented in Table 1.

A jury awarded $2.1 billion in damages to Pfizer Inc. in October for patent infringement claims that led to Viagra’s patent loss in the United States, which would have been the first time the world had filed a patent application to protect the drug. A Pfizer patent was set to expire in June 2013, but the lawsuit by the U. S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation is currently pending.
Pfizer had argued that it had no right to have the drug in a patent, since it was the first time that a patent had been granted in the U. for Viagra, the drug it had already filed with the U. Court of Appeals. After its infringement suit was filed, Pfizer had argued that the drug should not have been granted to the plaintiff because it was too similar to the active ingredient in Viagra, which was in a different class of drugs.
The plaintiffs argued that if a patent had been granted for Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction, they would have allowed the drug to stand as a “proprietary” invention. They also argued that the patent would have enabled Pfizer to market a generic version of Viagra, which would have saved money.
Both sides had moved to intervene in the suit, which resulted in a $2.1 billion settlement, but the panel disagreed with the decision to grant Pfizer a patent and instead ruled against the plaintiffs.
Pfizer appealed the decision in October, and the panel ruled against the plaintiffs, which reversed the decision of the original panel in April 2012, and ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in March.
After the verdict was announced, the court will decide the case on Friday.
